2001 Road Race Reports
18 Harriers ran in this year's Buntingtford 10. In a field of
almost 500 runners, Kevin Willett was the first Harrier to finish and 24th
overall in a time of 62:50. Nicky Klabe was the 2nd Harrier to complete and the
3rd lady overall in a time of 64:31. Andy Sewell was the 3rd Harrier to finish
in 66:39. The race was run in very cold and icy conditions.

Well done to Paul Mowbray who managed to get under 18 minutes
for 5k for the first at Stevenage. Paul now has three of the
10 fastest times
run by Harriers over the distance this year.

The Harriers came fifth in the 2nd race in the Boss Cross
Country League at Wellingborough. In the ladies race, Anna Berrill was once
again the 1st lady to finish followed by Avril Monmont in 4th position and Viv
Kilgour 15th . Nick Berrill was the 5th man to finish overall. Richard Piron,
Matt Burgin, Andy Sewell, Stuart Bartlett, Simon Fisher and Richard Adams were the
men's team
scorers. 35 members of the club ran in the race.

418 runners finished this year's Gt Barford Half
Marathon. The first man to finish in 1:10:21 was James Roche of Victoria Park
Harriers. James informed us that it was only the second half marathon he'd run.
The second man to finish, just seven seconds behind James in 1:10:28 was Paul
Gregory of Vale of Aylesbury. Paul also collected the MV45 prize. Richard Powell
of Vauxhall AC was the third man to finish in 1:10:56
The ladies race was won by Ellen Leggatt of Cirencester in
1:17:42. Ellen's time was a new course record. The second lady to finish was
our own Nicky Klabe in 1:23:35. The third lady to finish was Suzanne
Pritchard of St Albans Striders in 1:26:45. Suzanne was also the 1st LV40.
The men's team prize was won by the Vale of Ayelsbury AC and
the ladies team prize was won by Milton Keynes A.C. Click here for all the

Bedford
Harriers ran in the race. The first Harrier to finish was Morgan Walters in
1:17:05. Morgan's time was a new mv40
best time for the distance.
Other new club half marathon best times were set by Veronica Singleton 1:34:36
(lv40) and by David Sutcliffe 1:38:46 (mv65).
A number of Harriers got pb's. The list included Alastair
Fadden (1:22:19), Tony Parello (1:25:47), Mike Bernard (1:28: 33), Zac Hollis (1:29:17), Phil Wainwright
(1:30:44), Chris Williams (1:40:25) and Jim Gannon (1:45:46).

Pleased to report that Adam Dodsworth finished the Honolulu
Marathon in 3:51:45. Adam only arrived in Honolulu as few hours before the race
began after having undertaken some pre-race preparation at the Harriers
Christmas party on Friday night. Adam also ran with a chest infection. Click

It was another highly successful day for the Harriers at the
Nene Valley 10. Nicky Klabe, Anna Berrill and Julia Phillips won the ladies team
prize and Nick Berrill, Andy Sewell and Graham King won the 2nd men's team
prize.
The Harriers ladies once again did exceptionally well. Nicky
Klabe was the 2nd lady to finish in a new pb of 61:28 (a 65 second improvement).
Nicky's time was only seven seconds outside the senior ladies best ever time for
this distance of 61:21 which was set back in 1988. The 3rd lady to finish on the
day was Anna Berrill in 62:40. Anna's time was a pb and 73 second improvement on
her previous best which was set at Swineshead in September. Also showing
continuing improvement is Julia Phillips. Julia was the 5th lady to finish in a
new pb of 65:47. Julia's time was a new lv35
club best time for the
distance. Another lady setting a new 10-mile pb was Jackie Bullard with a run of
79:25.
Not to be outdone, the Harriers men also produced a string of
pb's. Nick Berrill was the 5th man to finish in 55:43.His time was the
fastest 10 mile time
run by a Harrier this year. Andy Sewell went under 64 minutes for the first
time, Graham King improved his pb by 46 seconds, Neil Klabe knocked over 4
minutes of his previous best and Derek Morrison, Jack Chana and Kevin Bullard
also ran best ever 10-mile times. David Sutcliffe who finished in 74:18 set a new
v65 club 10-mile best time.
Four of the times run at Nene Valley were among the ten
fastest run over
the distance this year.

It was another successful day for the Club at the
Wolverton 5. Of the 22 Harriers who ran in the race, at least half got pb's.
Nick Berrill, Kevin Willett, Anna Berrill, Paul Mowbray and Alaister Fadden all
finished in under 30 minutes. Nick Berrill was the first Harrier to finish
in 26:36. Kevin, Anna, Paul and Alistair got pb's. Anna was the second
lady to finish in 29:32. Her time was also a new senior
ladies club best time. Another new club best time was set by Julia Phillips
(lv35 31:32).Julia also won one of the lv35 awards for the race.
Other pb's included those of Andy Sewell, Graham King, Phil
Wainwright, Zac Hollis, Derek Morrison,Jack Chana and Jim Gannon.
In addition to individual performances, Anna, Julia and Avril
won the 2nd ladies team prize. Anna, Julia, Liz Byer and Deirdre Bethune won
Beds County Awards.

The Harriers came 5th in the first of the five Boss Trucks Cross
Country League races. Nick Berrill was the first Harrier to finish in sixth
place. The other men to score were Richard Piron, Stuart Barlett, Simon Fisher,
Graham Horne, Andy Sewell and Graham King. The men's team scored a total of 310
points.
In the ladies race, Anna Berrill was the first to finish overall.
Julia Phillips was in fourth place and Alice Crook was 17th. The ladies team
scored a total of 22 points.
The Harriers overall scored a total of 332 points
23 men and 11 ladies ran for the club and others turned out
to support the team. Many thanks to all.
The 2nd race in the series is at Wellingborough on the 16th
December.

It was another successful day for the Harriers at the Bishop
Storford 10. Nicky Klabe was the 2nd lady to finish in 63:24 and Julia Phillips
was the 3rd lady in 66:54. Julia's time was a new pb and also a new club lv35 best
time for the distance. Avril Monmont also had a good run and was the was the
3rd lv35 to finish in 69.00. Nicky, Julia and Avril won the ladies team
prize.
Nick Berrill was the 1st Harrier and the 5th man to finish
overall in 57:16. Graham King also had another good race and Neil Klabe clipped
over three minutes off his old pb to finish in 71:45.

Adam Dodsworth, running his first marathon for 12 years,
finished in a very respectable 3:46:16 at Leicester. Adam reports that it was
quite a hilly course and lonely as there were only about 200 runners. Adam has
not trained any further than a half marathon and reckons he should write a guide
on "how not to train for a marathon", He ran with new trainers on, had
a cold, and did no training for it!

St
Neots 9
(18th November 2001)
Tony Parello had an excellent run at the St Neots 9.

Three Harriers teams competed in the Cross Country Relays at
Mansfield on Saturday 10th November.
The senior ladies team of Anna Berrill, Avril Thomas and
Julia Phillips, completed the 3 x3k course in 35:39 and finished in a very
creditable 25th position out of 49 completing teams. Well done also to Chris
Armstrong who ran the course (on her own) in 17:44
The Harriers men's senior 'A' team of Alistair Fadden, Nick
Berrill, Kevin Willett and Richard Piron completed their 4 X 4k course in
1:14:43 to finish in 75th position out of 111 completing teams. The Harriers
senior men's 'B' team of Mike Bernard, Graham Horne, Marcus Lee and Graham King
completed the course in 1:26:05.
This was the first time the Harriers have taken part in this
event and very well done to all involved.

Colin and Viv have returned from their 3-week Himalyan Trip.
Viv Kilgour was first lady in the Mount Everest Challenge Marathon and finished
second lady overall in the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race. Colin was the 1st MV50
in the Mount Everest Challenge Marathon and the 3rd MV50 in the 100 Mile Race.

It was another successful day for the Harriers at the
Stevenage Half Marathon, the venue for this year's half marathon
championship.
Anna Berrill, ran exceptionally well and was the 1st lady
overall to finish in a time of 1:23:20. Anna's time was a near one minute
improvement on her previous best for the distance. The 2nd lady Harrier to
finish and the 3rd lady overall was Nicky Klabe in 1:24: 20. Julia Phillips was
the third lady Harrier to finish in 1:30:07. Julia's time was a pb and a new
LV35 club best time for the
distance. (Julia also won one the lv35 prizes). Deirdre Bethune also ran a new
pb of 1:46:48 and in the process improved her own LV50 half marathon club
best time by more than three minutes. Anna, Nicky, Julia and Deirdre won the
ladies team prize.
Nick Berrill was the first Harrier to finish and the third
man overall in 1:16:18. The second Harrier to finish and the seventh overall in
a new pb of 1:19:19 was Kevin Willett. Alastair Fadden was the third Harrier man
to finish in 1:26:40.
Many other Harriers achieved new pb's including Zac Hollis
(1:31:05), Derek Morrison (1:34:05), Adam Dodsworth (1:39:13) and Ian Kingston
(1:46:58). Well done also to Paul Kent who in his first half marathon ran a very
creditable 1:42:45 and Lynne Gingell who finished in under two hours for
the first time (1:59:39).
(Four
of the times run at Stevenage were amongst the ten fastest times run by Harriers
over the distance this year.)

Four lady members of the Harriers took part in this year's
national road relay races at Sutton. It was the first time the club had competed
in this event and in a high standard field, the girls (Nicky Klabe, Avril
Thomas, Anna Berrill and Julia Phillips) did exceptionally well and finished
37th out of 84 teams competing. For full results from the meeting click

There were some excellent performances by the Harriers in
last Sunday's Amsterdam races. One of the best runs was by Nick Berrill who
completed the marathon in 2:32:51. It was Nick's fastest time over the distance
for a number of years and only around seven minutes outside his own pb. Nick's
run also established a new club
best time for the distance. It broke Tony Barnes previous club best marathon
time, which was set back in 1991, by over three minutes.
In the half marathon race, there was another tremendous run
by Nicky Klabe. Running her first race since her recent injury, Nicky completed
in 1:23:34 and was the second lady to finish. Nicky's time was just 37 seconds
outside her own, and the club's best lady half marathon time of 1:22:57 which
was set at Liverpool in September.
Several Harriers recorded pb's in the half marathon including
Terry McEwen, Lesley Barnes, Jackie Bullard, Ian Kingston and Graham King. There
was also another good run by Jo Sawyers who finished in 1:35:00
Congratulations in the 10k race go to Jackie Lawes who got a
pb and also Norma King who ran her first ever road race.

Four Harriers ran in this year's Grizzley. Cliff Smith was
the first Harrier to finish in a time of 3:09:01 and 218th position. Richard,
Andy and Malcolm also competed in the 20 mile challenge. Cliff became
ill
after the race but is now on the road to recovery.

Phil and Adam represented the Harriers in this 10k. Adam
tells us that it was a hilly course and was one which attracted quite a bit of
rain. Despite this, Phil still managed to improve his pb over the distance.

Well done to Paul Mowbray who finally managed to get under 40
mins for 10k for the first time at Cambridge. Paul's time of 39:40 was a 21
seconds improvement on his previous best for the distance. Graham King also had
a good run at Cambridge with his time of 40:49 being a 61 second improvement
over his previous best.

15 Harriers ran in Sunday's
Standalone 10k and around another 20 Harriers ran in the Biddenham
10k. Tony Parello was the 1st Harrier to finish at Standalone and Jo Sawyers
was the 1st lady Harrier to finish. Both Gary Fuller and Jack Chana recorded new
pb's.
New 10k pb's at
Biddenham were set by Derek Morrison who clipped 24 seconds of his previous
best for the distance to run 44:56, and also by Mick Inskip and Angela Gallivan.
Also well done to Viv, Colin and Cliff who managed to rise at
around 5.0'clock on Sunday morning (the day after Avril's wedding) to run in the
Moors
& Tors 20 mile. According to reports, the course was a bit on the
difficult side but good practice for the 3-week trek and race across the
Himalayas which Colin and Viv are to start on next week.
Paul Mowbrey was the solo Harrier in the Southend
10k. One of Paul's ambitions is to get under 40 mins for the 10k. Bound to
come.

Andy Sewell continued his good run of form with another pb at
the Hinckley 'Dog & Hedgehog' Half Marathon. Andy's time of 1:24:38 was over
a minute up on his previous best of 1:25:41 which was set at Grunty Fen on the
7th September. Graham King also had a good race and produced his best time over
the distance for five years. Jack Chana recovered from a painful race at
Newcastle to run his
25th
race of the year.

Janet Clark and Chris Proud recently took part in the Rimini
Duathlon World Championships. The championships consisted of a 10k run, a
40km bike ride and a further 2.5k bike ride. Janet was the 17th lady to finish
in her age group in a time of 2:35:05. Chris was the 13th man to finish in his
age category in a time of 2:19:26.
On September 9th, Kath & Eric Grahn along with Simon
Fisher took part in the Bluesure
Half Ironman UK Triathlon at Llanberis. The event consisted of a 1.9k swim,
a 90k bike ride and a 21k run. Kath was the first to complete in an excellent
time of 5:22:00. Simon got round in 5:30:48 and Eric finished in 5:59:53

Gt
North
(16th September 2001)
Around 34 Harriers ran in this year's Gt North Run.Jo Sawyers
improved her half marathon time for the second week in succession to finish in
1:33:31 a four and a half minute improvement. Phil Wainwright improved his time
by almost 20 minutes over last year with a run of 1:37:58 and Angus McKinnon's
time of 1:41:05 was a 24 minute improvement over 2000. Jack Chana, who carried
an injury for a large part of the race, also recorded a pb along with Gary
Fuller, Sean Trotter and Adam Dodsworth. Andy Smith another injury victim, still finished in under 2.00 hours.
Lynne Gingell and Steve Crane ran their first half marathons and Victoria Barnes
completed her first race over the distance at just 17. Well done Vicky.

Swineshead was the venue of this year's 10 mile championship
race The 1st Harrier to finish and the second man overall on the day was Nick
Berrill in a time of around 56:32. Kevin Willett was the 2nd Harrier to finish
and the third man overall in 59:18 (first time under 60) and the third Harrier
man to finish in a new pb of 64.15 was Alistair Fadden.
The ladies race was won by Anna Berrill in a new pb of around
63.53. The second lady Harrier to finish was Julia Phillips in 68:53 and the
third lady to finish was Janet Clark in 70:39

Jo Sawyers had a good run in the Cransley Hospice Half
recording a new pb of 1:38:00 and also being the 3rd lady in the race. Gary
Fuller also got a new pb of 1:48:42.

Despite very windy conditions, Andy Sewell managed to get a
new half marathon pb of 1:25:42 at Grunty Fen. Andy's time at the 10 mile mark
during the race of 64:24, was also well inside his pb for that
distance.

60 members of the Club ran in Mr Buf's 4k dash
around Priory Marina. The first man to finish was Nick Berrill followed Morgan
Walters (Beds & County) and
Franck Monment. The first lady to finish was Anna Berrill followed by Avril
Thomas and Jenny Tuite. Nick & Anna were the first couple to complete along
with Lesley and Steve. Linda and her spotty dog also won a prize. The run was
followed by an excellent buffet in the Bar.

Graham King continued his tremendous run of form this year
with another pb at the Nene Valley 5k. Graham's time of 19:33 was a 19 second
improvement on his previous 5k best of 19:52 which was set at
Peterborough on August 8th. Graham has now knocked half a minute off his 5k time
since Cranfield in July. The Nene Valley 5k was Graham's 26th race of the year.
He now ties with Adam Dodsworth as the two Harriers who have run the
most
races in 2001.

The Harriers put in a tremendous performance in the Liverpool
Half Marathon. In a field of 1,600 runners, Nick Berrill was the 2nd
man to finish in a time of 1:12:32 and in the process set a new club best
for the distance.
Nicky Klabe was the 3rd lady to finish in 1:22:57. Nicky's time was a pb by 20
minutes and also a new ladies half marathon club best time. Anna Berrill was the 6th lady to finish
in 1.24.18. Anna's time was a pb by four minutes.
Others running well included Terry McEwen who knocked four minutes off his PB to run 1:36:40 and Neil Klabe
who improved his pb by
15 minutes to 1:37:22. Well done also to Mike Bernard, who despite having an
injured knee, still managed to complete the race.

Graham (Mr Buf) had an excellent 5k run at Barking. Graham's
time of 17:42 was his fastest over the distance since he ran 18:35 at Stevenage
last November.

David Sutcliffe, Bill Billington and John Keenan were the
third placed v60s team in the BVAF 5k championship at Milton Keynes on Sunday.
David's time of 22:20 was a new club v65 time for the distance and a 14 second
improvement on his and the club's previous 5k best. Barnet AC were the winning
team in the v60 category followed by Milton Keynes AC.
The Harriers men's v40 team were fifth overall behind Nene
Valley, Aldershot AC, Mansfield AC and Milton Keynes.

Jeanette Cheatham and Fergal McCrystal won the Harriers
Annual 5k Handicap Race held in Bedford Park. Eve Brett and Barbara North were
the 2nd and 3rd ladies to finish in the race and Gerry Kinsella and Mark Holland
were the 2nd and 3rd men.
The first runner past the post in
the race was Nick Berrell in 16:47; Anna Berrell was the first lady to finish in
18:56.

The Blisworth 5 (our 5 mile championship race) produced
another string of excellent performances. The first Harrier to finish and the
ninth man overall was Nick Berrill in 26:35. Nick's time was the fastest run
over the distance by a Harrier for some years. The next two Harriers Matt Burgin
and Franck Monment both finished in 29:55. Matt knocked a minute of his old pb to go under 30 mins for the
first time. Alistair Fadden was the next Harrier to finish in a new pb of 30:04.
Nick, Matt, Franck and Alastair were the 3rd men's senior team.
The girl's had
another tremendous night. Nicky Klabe was the second lady to finish in a new pb
and club best time of 30:06 (a 35 second improvement). The third lady to finish
was Anna Berrell in 30:53 and the 6th lady to finish was Julia Philips in
32:53. Nicky, Anna and Julia won the senior ladies team prize. Avril Thomas, Viv
Kilgour and Jacqui Furr were the 2nd, 3rd and 5th lady vets to finish in 32:53,
33:40 and 34:12 respectively. The girls won the ladies vets team
prize.
56 Harriers ran in the race which made the club the largest contingent.

Thorney
5
(19th August 2001)
Well done to Graham King and Adam Dodsworth who, following
their participation in the Bedford Park 5k and the Blisworth 5, ran their 3rd
race in five days at the Thorney 5. Also well done to Andy Sewell who clipped 40
seconds off his best for the distance to finish in 30:49.

More success again for the Harriers in the third and final race
of the Bedford Park 5k Series. Nicky Klabe was the first lady to finish on the
night in a time of 18:21 and Anna Berrill was the third lady in 18:59. Julie
Phillips was the fourth lady in 20:14 and Avril Thomas was the fifth lady in
20:19. The first
Harrier man to finish was Simon Fisher in 18:27 followed by Neil Lovesey in
19.00.
Placings in the series overall were decided on an age and sex
graded basis. Neil Lovesey came 10th, David Sutcliffe was 8th, Anna Berrill was
6th and Nicky Klabe was 5th.

At the Bearbrook 10k, Jo lowered her 10k time by
another 17 seconds to 43:17 and Graham King, who ran his 19th race of the year,
finished in 41:50. Colin Liddiard completed in just over 49 mins. All three did
well as the race was run in fowl weather with horizontal ' heavy' rain. The race
was also memorable as the showers at the end of the race were apparently
mixed.

There were a couple of good performances by Harriers at the
Pitsford Reservoir 10k. Jo Sawyers was the 6th lady to finish in a new pb of
43:34 and Gary Fuller also got a new personal best for the distance of 47:50.
Malcolm, Andrea and Dave also ran.

After getting very near in the last few races, Graham King
finally got under 20 mins for the 5k at Peterborough. Graham's time of 19:52 was a 8 second
improvement on his previous best for the distance of 20.00 which was set at the
Cranfield 5k in July.

Harlow 10
(Sunday 5th August)
Nicky Klabe was the 1st lady to finish in the Harlow 10. It
was the 5th time this year that Nicky's been the 1st lady finisher in a race. Nicky's
time of 62:33 was a new pb and a six minute improvement on her previous best for
the distance which was set at Cople on Boxing Day. Another lady Harrier, Julie Philips, was the fourth lady to finish at
Harlow in a time of 69:39. The first Harrier man to finish was Andy
Sewell in 65:19, which was just outside his pb.

Kevin Willett continued his excellent season with another pb
at the Wellingborough 5. Kevin's time of 28:34 was a 30
second improvement on his Colworth 5 run of 29:04 in June. Very well done also
to Jacqui Furr who in her first run for the Harriers, was the 4th lady to finish
in a very creditable 33:09.

Around 40 Harriers ran in the 2nd Bedford
Park 5k race on Wednesday 25th July. The first Harrier to finish in a new PB of
16:52 was Kevin Willet. Paul Langford was the second Harrier in 17:57 and
Paul Mowbray was the third in 18:25. Nicky Klabe was the first lady Harriers to finish
and the second lady overall in 18:29. The second lady Harrier to
finish and the third overall was Anna Berrill in 18:48. Avril Thomas was the 3rd
lady Harrier to finish in 20:21. Veronica Singleton was the 1st Lady vet in
21:03.

The Milton Keynes Half and the St Ives 10k were the two main
races on Sunday 22nd July. Andy Sewell, in a time of 1:27:25, was the first Harrier to
finish at Milton Keynes and Neil Lovesey in 39:51 was the first Harrier to
finish at St Ives. Cliff Smith, Colin Bennetts and Malcolm McEwen also competed
in the 30 mile Downlands
Challenge.

The Harriers picked up more awards at the Stevenage Relays on
Wednesday the 18th. The senior ladies team of Nicky Klabe, Anna Berrill and Janet Clark
won the ladies race and the Beds County Awards. The senior mens team and the ladies vets team also won Beds County Awards.

59 Harriers ran in this year's Cranfield 10k The first lady in
finish in a time of 18:12 was Nicky Klabe.
Nicky's time was a new Harriers
ladies best time for the
distance. The second lady to finish was Anna Berrill (also now of Bedford
Harriers ) in a time of 18:53. Avril Thomas finished in 20:31 which was
a new ladies LV35 best time. Margaret Martin also set a new
club 5k best for her age
category. Nicky, Avril and Veronica Singleton won the ladies team prize.
The first Harrier to finish was Kevin Willett in
17:04. The second man was Stuart Bartlett in 18:07 and the third was Andy Sewell
in 18:25. There were also lots of pb's including one by Adam Dodsworth who
improved his 5k best by 53 secs.
Nick Berrill was the eighth man to finish in 16:15. Nick who
has now joined the Harriers, entered the race as an unattached.

Rugby
6
(Wednesday 11th July)
Excellent night for the Harriers at the Rugby 6, the final
race in this year's Grand Prix Series. The Overall winner of the Lady Series was
Nicky Klabe. Nicky won two of the races she ran in (Weedon & Banbury) and
was second in three others. The second lady in the series overall was Anna
Berrill. Anna won one of her five races (Bedford 6) was 2nd in another, third in
two others and fifth in another. The fourth lady overall in the series was Janet
Clark. Janet was 4th, 5th and 7th three times in her five races. In addition to
individual prizes, the Harriers ladies also won the Team Prize for the
Series.
In the Rugby 6 race itself, Nicky was the second lady to
finish in 36:53.Alastair Fadden who was the first Harrier man to finish, also
ran 36:53. Good runs also by Ann was the second lady to finish in 38:53, by Adam
Dodsworth who improved his 6 mile time over Bedford by around two and a half
minutes and by Janet Clark and Graham King who also improved their times
compared to the Bedford 6.
Nicky, Janet and Dolores Wallis won the
ladies team prize at Rugby.

Seventeen Harriers ran in the Milton Keynes 10k, the seventh race in the eight-race Grand Prix Series. Star of
the show once again was Nicky Klabe, who in very hot conditions, got a new pb
and another senior ladies best time of 38:24. Nicky was the second lady to
finish and the first Harrier. Stuart
was the first Harrier male to finish in 38:33. Paul Roberts had a good run
(39:30) and Viv Kilgour also did well (42:15).Janet helped Phil get round and
Jackie and Kevin finished together.

On one on the hottest days of the year so far, more than half
a dozen Harriers ran the Dunstable 10k. Tony Parello was the first Harrier to
finish in around 41:20 and Christine Armstrong was the first lady Harrier to
finish in 47:22. Chris was also the 1st LV45.

33 Harriers ran in Bedford Park 5k. The first Harrier
to finish and the second lady on the night was Nicky Klabe. Nicky's time of
18:43 was a pb and also a new ladies club best for the distance. The second
Harrier to finish was Steve Gaunt in around 18:55 followed by Neil Lovesey in
18:56.Well done to Adam Dodsworth who ran his
fourth race in six days.

Banbury
5
(Tuesday 20th June)
Nicky Klabe was the first lady to finish in the Banbury 5,
the sixth race in the eight race Grand Prix series. Nicky's time of 30:41 was a
pb and also a new ladies club best time over the distance. (It was the second
Grand Prix race Nicky has won in succession). Stuart Bartlett was the first
Harrier overall to finish in 29:56 and Graham King was the third in 32:47. Adam
Dodsworth's improved his pb by 6 secs.Nine
Harriers ran in the race.

Almost 40 Harriers ran in this year's Colworth 5. The first
Harrier to finish and the 3rd man overall was Kevin Willett in a new pb of 29:04. Dave Briggs was the second Harrier home and Richard Piron (who also organized
the race) the 3rd. The first lady Harrier to finish and the 3rd lady
overall was Jo Sawyers (33:32). Delores Wallis won an age
category prize..

The Harriers ladies team did well at the Weedon 10k. Nicky was the first lady to finish in 39:25. Veronica won her age
category and Nicky, Veronica and Janet Clark won the ladies team prize. Quite a
few of the men also did well on what is a notoriously hilly course. Stuart
finished in 38:03, David ran 40:53 and Graham King did 42:18.

26 Harriers ran the Bedford 6 on Tuesday. The first Harrier
to finish and the 8th man overall was Paul Langford in 34:51. Stuart Bartlett
was the second Harrier in 36:00 and David Harris was third in 37:39. Veronica
Singleton was the first lady Harrier to finish in 41:52 followed by Viv Kilgour
in 42:13 and Janet Clark in 43:48

328 runners finished this year's Laser Care Cranfield 10k.
The first man was Tim Doyle of Advance Performance (34:27). The first lady was
Samantha Tophil of Fairlands Valley Spartans (41:20). Advance Performance won
the Men's Team Prize and Ware Joggers won the Ladies Team Prize.

Last year Colin Bennetts achieved the remarkable feat of
running three marathon in three days. Colin hasn't repeated that feat so far
this year, but on the 2nd June he did run a half marathon at Buxton
- which started at 5.30 in the evening - and on the next day he ran a
marathon at Blackpool
and that started at 8.30 in the morning. Colin didn't get a pb at Blackpool,
but Cliff Smith did and so did Eric Grahn.

Corby
5
(29th May 2001)
Eight Harriers ran the Corby 5 on Tuesday. Stuart Bartlett
was the first to finish in 29:39. David Harris ran 31:02 and got a pb and Nicky
Klabe who was the fourth lady to finish, matched her pb and the ladies club 5
mile record of 31:03 which was set at Harborough last week. Adam Dodsworth who
got a pb for the 5k at Stevenage on Sunday knocked 6 seconds of his previous
best for 5 mile to finish in 36.00 and colin Welch clipped 48 seconds of his
previous pb of 38:40 which was set at Thornborough back in March 1997. Both Graham King and Bill Bethune
also improved their 5 mile times over the Harborough race.

60 Harriers ran, out of a total field of 196, ran in the Sharnbrook
10k, the Club's 10k Championship race. The first Harrier to finish and the third
man overall was Kevin Willett. The first lady Harrier to finish and the first
lady overall was Nicky Klabe. Jackie Keenan won an age
category prize.
The official Sharnbrook results are incomplete and subject to
alteration. (They appear to have been rounded up to the nearest 10
seconds).

Four Harriers ran in the Stevenage 5k on Sunday. Colin Welch did
particularly well knocking 43 seconds of his previous best (which was set at
Cranfield in July 2000) to finish in 22:20. Adam Dodsworth also ran a new best
for the distance of 21:09. Jack Chana and Steve Crane also competed.

Just a week after setting a new ladies club best time for the
10k at Silverstone, Nicky Klabe set a new club best for the 5 mile at
Market Harborough. On a hilly course, Nicky ran 31:03 and in the process
knocks 26 seconds of the previous club best of 31:29 which was set by Avril
Thomas at Corby in May 1996. Nicky was the second lady to finish at Market
Harborough and, after two of the eight race mid-week Grand Prix series, is
currently the leading lady. Viv Kilgour also had a good run and received a prize for being the 3rd
LV35 and Adam Dodsworth improved his pb by 38 seconds.

Eye 10k
(Sunday 20th May)
Seven Harriers ran in the10k at Eye. First Harrier to finish
was Jack Chana who got a new PB and ran his ninth
race of the year. Good performance by Colin Welch who knocked another couple
of seconds of his PB and also Dave Sutcliffe who ran a faster time at Eye than
at Silverstone (which is usually considered a faster course).

Only a few days afterJo Sawyers set a new ladies club best of
19:22 for the 5k at Milton keynes, Nicky Klabe smashed the old club 10k best time at
Silverstone. Nicky's time of 38:42 knocked over two minutes of the previous
senior ladies record of 40:49 which was set by Avril Thomas at Milton Keynes in
1996. Nicky's time also beat Kath Browning time of 38:48 which was set in June
1997 at Cranfield. Kath's time at Cranfield had been the fastest 10k ever run by
a lady member. (Kath was a V35 at the time). In a high quality field, Nicky was
the 3rd lady to finish
at Silverstone.
24 Harriers ran at Silverstone and there were lots of PB's. Stuart Bartlett was the 1st Harrier to finish in a time of
36:38. Graham Bufton was the 2nd Harrier in 37:40 and David Harris the
3rd Harrier man to finish in 38:44. David's time was a new PB as were those of
Chris Williams, Steve Crane, Colin Welch and Debbie Bilham. (There may be more).

Kath Grahn produced another good 10k run at Blackpool. Out of
a total field of 3,000 runners, Kath was the eighth lady to finish in a time of
44:45. Eric ran 43:30 in the same race.

Superb run by Jo Sawyers who ran 19.22 in the
Womens Race for Life 5k run at Willen Lake. Jo was the 3rd lady to finish from a
field of 3,500. Jo's time was also a new ladies best over the distance.

Seven Harriers ran new PB's at the Leighton Buzzard 10.
Alastair Fadden, who was the first Harrier to finish, went under 65 mins for the
first time. Adam Dodsworth improved his best as did Paul Roberts, Colin Welch, Malcolm McEwen
and Steve Crane. Debbie Bilham also knocked over five minutes of her old time.

Kevin Willett ran a new pb of 35:43 in the Whitstable 10k.
In very windy conditions, Kevin was the 10th runner to finish out of 539.

Eric, Kathy and Derrick all set new PBs at Sheffield. Eric
knocked 30 mins of his previous best to finish in 3:29:56 and Kath reduced her
previous best by 29 mins to finish in 3:30:28. Derrick improved his best time by
seven minutes to 3:37:08.

Some excellent performances in at London. The
most outstanding improvement goes to Jack Chana who knocked 45 minutes of his
previous best to finish in 3:35:25. Teresa Cooper also improved here best by 8
minutes to 4:23:24. The first man to finish was Kevin Willett in 3:06:44. The
first lady was Nicky Klabe in 3:35:00.

The Harriers won the Erlensee Cup for having the highest numbers of
finishers (29) in this year's Sandy 10 on Sunday 15th April. The Men's vet team of Graham
Bufton, Michael Barnard, Steve Gaunt & Richard Whiteman won the 1st men's
vets team award. The Club also won the 3rd men's team award and the 2nd ladies
team.

Sunday 8th April
Good runs by Stuart Bartlett and Graham Bufton in the 10k at
Royston. Stuart finished in 35:55 and was the 18th overall. Graham ran 36:49 and
was 25th.

Sunday 1st April
Congratulations to Rachel Gibney of Basildon AC who was the
first lady to finish in the Oakley 15. The second lady to finish was
Bedford Harriers very own Nicky Klabe. The third lady was Collette Maynard of
Stourport.
The first man to finish was Huw Lobbof Beds & County. Matt
Linbourne, an unattached runner was second and Neil Ovington of Milton Keynes
was third.
