Race Report.

Today (Saturday)  I took part in the Edinburgh International Breakfast Run. Some may think it it was a little mad to be doing it so close to the marathon but the course route was to take us into the heart of the city and the goodie bag was definately an incentive for running in it. It was also to be a nice warm up for the pending marathon.

The temperature was creeping up before the start and I was already rather warm in the banana costume. I had a good chat to many of the participants who had come from all over the world. One had come over from Hong Kong and had said that Edinburgh was a lot hotter than where she lives. Many would not think that Scotland could be so warm.

The start was at 8am, a 5k loop, and began from Ross Fountain in West Park. Firstly we had to climb a rather steep hill in the West Street gardens and then run up the steep steps leading onto the road, which was traffic free as it had been closed off for our run. The front vehicle and sweep vehicles then met us and we were then running up the cobbled hilly streets to Edinburgh Castle. It is hard enough to walk up in the heat but to run was a challenge and a half. We then headed to the Royal Mile and the guards were changing outside the palace. We passed the Scottish Parliament and then headed to the Grass Market and to Princess Street gardens, finally finishing back at the start.

It was good to chat to the participants whilst running and I was asked by several tourists if they could have their photograph taken with me. I am not sure why as I was only wearing a banana costume, may be they had not seen a banana running down the road before? But I was happy to oblige. I was also asked to sign someone's flag.

The Breakfast Run was shown on STV and many photographs were taken so they should appear at some point. However, already on You Tube there is a little clip of the start of the run and if you look very closely you will see me to the left hand side of the film.

The goodie bag was fantastic. Inside the specially made sports bag, there was a Breakfast Run t-shirt and long sleeved t-shirt, several vouchers, sweets and treats, we were able to get a bowl of porridge with toppings of our choice including fruit and cream etc, we were also given a haggis / haggis roll and a yoghurt. A lovely run and I got very unusual tan marks due to the costume's positioning!
