Bedford Sports Awards

In December 2010 three members of Bedford Harriers were invited to the Bedford Corn Exchange as they had been nominated in sporting categories in the Bedford Sports Awards. The annual Bedford Sports Awards evening recognises some of the very best of sports men and women across Bedford Borough for their achievements and contributions to sports and all sports are represented in the evening's event.

This year's guests consisted of Two Step Fitness (street dancing), Mark Harlow (free style foootball) and guest speaker Barry Fry (currently with Peterborough Football Club). Canapes and non-alcoholic drinks were free flowing and the bar was open.

Fourteen judges had the difficult task to decide on the nominations for the categories and the overall winners within the eleven categories following a set criteria. Well done to the following....

Steve Crane was nominated for the Sports Administrator and Club Person of the Year Award (Running Section). Steve has spent many years with Bedford Harriers in a variety of roles and showing high levels of commitment, giving up his 'free' time (days, evenings and weekends to organise races, coach sessions, liase with other clubs and doing other jobs that nobody else wants to.

Keith Lakin was nominated for the Sports Coach Award (Running Section). Keith has supported the beginners from April ever year and continues to support them as the progress and move up to other running groups within Bedford Harriers. He is always supporting his club runners at events and provides marshaling at the club's own events.

Katarina Darcy was nominated for the Open Pride Award (Athletics Section). Katarina is a (registered) disabled athlete who has competed in more non-disabled events than the majority of non-disabled athletes this year and knocked off 16 minutes from her personal best in Edinburgh Marathon. She is committed to training and competing (to raise money for charity), promoting disability sports, coaching disabled athletes in athletics, coaching adult beginner runners, and always puts others before herself.
