Enfield's 'Queen Elizabeth Stadium' is about five miles from the Olympic Stadium and well placed for Enfield & Harringey AC to host an event to which visitors from overseas were invited to join racewalkers from UK clubs. Starting and finishing in the stadium, the three and five mile contests involved a series of loops on tarmac footpaths around football pitches and flowerbeds.

This gathering of over 100 fanatics included walkers from Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, New Zealand, Germany, as well as a group of Brazilians who arrived late and were offered a one-mile specilly arranged race. They were joined by several of those who had just completed the three or five mile event.

The twelve minute mile is a speed at which the 'average' Harrier could walk when hurrying eg for a bus, so missing this target was slightly annoying. With the Portuguese winner taking 40 minutes and the last finishers taking 70, the field was spread all round the park and most of the race spent chasing folks about 100m ahead. Such factors tend to making racewalking tedious, but the walking fraternity are a hugely entertaining gang to meet up with from to time.
