The only race walk on offer South of the Thames this weekend involved
catching two trains, a 'replacement bus' and a stretch on the Croyden
Tramway, followed by four hilly laps on an unusually sultry late September
Sunday, round a posh residential part of East Surrey with poorly
maintained roads.
So plenty of excuses for a 'slowest ever pace' of well over 13min per
mile. Compensation was Surrey Walkers' hospitality, with loads of
home-made cakes supplied by supporters of one of the UK's few surviving 'Racewalking
only' clubs and the cheerful company of an assembly of racewalking
knowledge and experience, enthusiastic to the point of obsession - almost
like runners in fact!
