Fred Hughes 10 (time 1.25.30)
After a late night at the Harriers Awards Ceremony (great puddings!)
drinking and dancing I woke at 7 to drive to the Fred Hughes 10mile race,
lovingly created by the St. Albans Striders. I picked up the very nice
Rebecca Fleckney and off we set. Not far into the journey I remembered
that I'd forgotten my socks - oh dear, this will be the third time I've
done this, I was facing running ten miles sockless, not a delightful
prospect. My fears were quelled when we reached the venue, they had a
running shop selling, yep, socks, I purchased a pair - wow £10! But
apparently they are 'very good socks' (hilly?) they didn't even have any
cool colours, still I probably would have paid even more if need be!
All socked up and after a brief chat with some very nice Ampthill and
Flitwick Flyers and our own equally lovely Ian Hammet we walked to the
start, brrr pretty chilly but still ok for shorts :) The course was sort
of one and a half laps of undulating road, a few twisty turney bits and a
few cars about but otherwise reasonably pleasant. The Marshall's were
pretty good, lots of encouragement and water stations aplenty. The sun was
shining and I ran a fairly decent time for me. We were given a nice bright
t shirt and a bag containing - yes, socks! A pair of pink socks to be
precise, they are super soft and infused with aloe, how decadent...not
sure about the colour but I will definitely try them out, I'm imagining
they will make my nailess, rotten old runners feet all soft and beautiful
yes?
Not everybody wanted their socks so I came
away with three pairs, plus my super pricey ones, that's four. I'm still
stunned that I started the day sockless and ended up with four pairs!
There were also crisps and bananas. Free tea and cakes rounded off a
pretty good mornings work. Overall a nice race, well organised and
marshalled. Thanks St Albans Striders
