Crawley is best known as an urban sprawl fed by its proximity to Gatwick Airport rather than for rural calm. A pleasant surprise therefore to compete on a smooth tarmac walkway winding its way round a good sized lake in a very large country park, with changing and catering facilities used normally by a well-heeled local golf club.

Jack Fitzgerald, apparently a famed veteran runner and racewalker, would hinself have been puzzled at the choice of racing over either 5.9 or 10.325 km., two options apparently chosen to enable the timekeepers etc to remain rooted to the same spot while walkers circled the lake either four or eight times.

Even at well over 8 minutes per km, which the average Harrier could easily achieve when hurrying to catch a bus or to get to work, this was a really enjoyable outing and and a reminder that there are better options than trundling round a running track about 15 times.

Good luck to the EVAC 'Track and Field' team. (technical advice offered to any Harrier having a shot at picking up points by trying the racewalk!)
