Another Sunday another 'entry on the day race' Milton Keynes inaugural 20 miler As my daughter is expecting imminently and I'm on hand to assist when the big day arrives, I'm currently not pre booking any races. This is leading me to some very interesting weekends. I discovered yesterday that the MK Festival of running was on and you could indeed enter on the day, the choices were 5k, 10k, half Mara and for the first time they had introduced a 20 miler. So of course that was the one for me. It was a sunny start to this morning but cloudy upon arrival. I thought I'd try out my charity vest for VLM so I could check for any potential wardrobe malfunctions. Met up with a few harriers for a quick photo opp and before we knew it we were off. I set of a bit fast, the first five miles all under 8 mins, woops... I slowed a little and tried to enjoy the surroundings, it wasn't too bad, lots of ups and downs as we went under bridges, friendly locals with jelly babies and plentiful water stations. Spotted quite a few running friends and at about 11 miles we joined up with the half marathon runners, a nice touch and not too crowded. Upon reaching 14 miles I began slowing and felt tired, took a gel at 15 and to be honest the last 5 weren't easy, and then there's a nice big hill half a mile before the end. Some of you will know about this hill, it's a real sting in the tail. I pushed on as I could see a sub 3 hr time was possible, I'm now the owner of a shiny new PB 2.56.17 7th lady in my age category too- been ages since I had one! and a good sized medal. Glad I took it easy at park run on Saturday :) Sarah |
