And then ...
Swavesey Half Marathon 22 March
Another weekend adventure - where could I find a race that was reasonably long and took entries on the day? I really fancied Ashby but despite my best tactics failed to
get a place. Then I found Swavesey, a half marathon from Swavesey Village College, that's Cambridge way, bound to be flat! There was also a five mile fun run taking place
and this was full of young runners - great to see! A few texts later and I'd roped in fellow bonkers runner Rebecca Fleckney.
We left very early to ensure a place, the set up was very efficient based in Swavesey Village College. The start was in what appeared to be the car park, music all around
us. We set off at 10am into a cool breeze. As usual I took off pretty fast, I don't mind this strategy at the moment as it affords me time when I slow down and get tired
later, the first few miles were well under 8mins.
After a couple of miles the flat course turned to the right and what I saw made me gasp- we had full view of all the front runners and the lead car, the speed they were
going was incredible and it was wonderful to watch, this rarely happens in races as the fast ones are usually ahead and there are obstacles such as trees and buildings.
Soon the sun appeared and it warmed up, the terrain was varied, grass, trail, a little road and some field. Marshals were everywhere and most appeared to be 12-15 years old and very supportive.
At around 6 miles we started on a double lapped area, not nice seeing the 10mile marker when you are at six!! At least we knew what was coming.
As I reached 10 miles my garmin read 1.23 not terrible so I decided to continue working hard to maybe get a decent time.
The last three miles were very hard work and I was busy targeting a lady in front - eventually overtaking her in the last mile.
The finish line couldn't have come sooner, flat is ok but there wasn't much to break it up and even the slight breezes picked up across the fenlands. Quite pleasedwith
Garmin time of 1.50.07 and Rebecca did really well too!
