Note the "10K" is nominal - 12K would be closer.
This was my second Lakeland Trail event and was, once again, well-organised
and can be highly recommended.
That a Hawkshead car park was flooded and that the organisers arranged a
coach shuttle service to transport competitors from Ambleside probably says
it all about the muddy conditions underfoot. However the weather for the
event was fine and the views were as magnificent as ever.
The Hawkshead events uses one of the several Lakeland "coffin routes" -
traditional routes by which coffins were carried from remote parts for
burial in consecrated ground. The Hawkshead one is particularly steep and
the organisers do nothing to reduce its notoriety. However, I thought I was
running unusually well and had gone about 999 metres beyond a sinister
"Coffin 1km" sign before I realised that the 1km referred to the start of
the climb and not the top!
Any latent fell-running ambitions I may have had received a further blow
when the first three ladies to finish all overtook me in the last mile on
the descent to the finish.
