Bedford Harriers A.C.
Several aspects of the 10kmdu Stade Toulousain Athlétisme were more like a rugby match than a running race.
The president of the organising club attempted several dummy passes to the pre-race toilet queue (1 cubicle for more than 500 entrants) by saying there were plenty of toilet facilities around the adjacent rugby stadium. (True – but they were locked!).
Just moments before the gun, the starts of the 5km and 10km races were separated by 10 minutes “in the interests of security”. This might have meant my penalty for crossing the congested start line in the 10K was reduced to 8 seconds (NB) but it also meant that the two races met head-on in a scrum in a narrow footpath tunnel under the autoroute! Several people touched down at this point! In the circumstances I was pleased with my 39:05 (3 seconds outside the club best time and frustratingly close to a 38) for the flat canal-side course.
And my 1st-in-category prize – a ticket for a Stade Toulouse rugby match!
