I was intrigued by a review in Runners World on the Mynyddislwyn Mile - one of the UK's hardest races - so as I am still in Wales and it had stopped raining I decided to have a go. Mynyddislwyn is a hamlet near Newport in Gwent and wasn't even on my road map - I had to find it on Google. After driving up a very large hill and parking at Penrhiwarwydd Farm (!) you had to walk down the other side of the hill to the start. The whole course is up a single track road which is 1:8 - steeper than Cemetry Hill. By halfway only the best runners were still running! I finished in 12.42 and the winner's time was 8.25. There were only 35 runners and I came 22nd. It was an experience not to be repeated, but the views driving back down the hill were breathtaking.
