Bob Wells 2.59.08 1st MV60

I did 2:59:08 in the Toulouse Marathon. I don't really care about the seconds - it is the "2" that means most to me! I was a minute slower than Dublin 2007 but I didn't have the benefit of a brewery visit the day before the race this time.

Although our Indian summer (a record 31C on 6th October) is definitely over this was probably the warmest conditions (20C) I have had for a marathon since Halstead 2002 (3:11) - but the light showers were helpful and with plenty of water stations there was no danger of dehydration.

The new course was as flat a Abingdon but that did not stop a joker erecting a sign "Sommet du Col de Desmoiselles" at the top of a 6 foot rise shortly before the finish. I felt what he was getting at.

There were about 3000 participants and pretty good supportive crowds (runners names were printed on race numbers which generated lots of personal bravos) and plenty of entertainment round the course - flamenco dancing, bands and scantily clad ladies on stilts - perhaps that cost me a few seconds of appreciation.
