Beds & County's Martin Yelling won the second Cranfield University
5k in a time of 14.59 after holding off John Downes of London Irish in
an elbow to elbow sprint for the line.
After the initial kilometre six runners began to detach
themselves from the strung out field with William Levett of Vauxhall
Motors AC and Downes forcing the pace down the long decent to the midway
point. The four others content to follow the pace included Yelling,
Shaftbury Barnett's Peter Ford and the Vauxhall Motors AC pair of Owain
Matthews and Darren Deed.
The steady drag up to the Nissan roundabout was enough for Levett to
turn the screw with only Yelling and Downes able to follow.
Over the top, with just 800 metres to go Downes began to wind the
pace up. At one point it looked as if Downes would solo to victory, but
Yelling dug deep to stay on his shoulder. Coming into the final turns
with 200 metre to go, Yelling used his experience to get the jump on
Downes. Then with the line
in sight Downes began to come back, but it was too late, Yelling had won
after running a tactically perfect race, with Downes a little
disappointed to lose out by such a narrow margin. |
