Bedford Harriers Half Marathon
(Sunday 9th December 2007)

1,385 runners completed Sunday's 2007 Bedford Harriers Half Marathon which was run in  somewhat appalling conditions. The race winner was Richard Burgess-Gamble of Barnet & District in 1:09:56. Richard's run was just 18 seconds outside the course record of 1:09:38. The second man was Marcin Fudaley of MK Marshall in 1:10:41 followed Matthew Blundell  of Notts AC / RAF in 1:10:53. The first lady to finish was Lucy Hasell of Bristol and West AC in 1:17:09 ( Lucy's run was just 33 seconds outside the ladies course record of 1:16:36) followed by Glenda Banaghan in 1:23:55.

Harriers Results

Around 40 Harriers ran in the race. The first to finish was Alastair Fadden in 1:23:43, followed by Stuart Trevallion in 1:24:16 and Bob Wells who was the 1st MV60 in 1:24:21. Bob's run was also a new club best time. The first Harriers lady was Carla Fisher in 1:32:14 followed by Renee Corbett who was running her first half marathon in 1:34:33. Well done also to Iva Barr who finished in 2:48:08 to establish a new LV80 club best time for the distance.

The Grim & Nene Valley 10
(Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd December 2007)

Very well done again to Donna McEwenBob Wells  and Nora Haggart who, on a rain-soaked day, all set new club best times at the Nene Valley 10. Donna's time of 59:56 was a 1 mins 25 secs improvement on the previous SL best for 10 of 61:21 which was set by Michelle Brown at Swineshead in September 1988. Donna was the 1st lady in the race and also improved her own pb by 3 mins 15 secs. Bob's time of 63:08 was a 1 mins 3 secs improvement on the previous MV60 best of 64:11 which Bob set himself at Henlow in November 2006. Nora's time of 76:04 was a 16 secs improvement on the previous LV50 best of 76:20 which was set by Teresa Munns at Ostende in March 2003.

Four Harriers ran in the The Grim which is an 8-mile off road challenge in Aldershot. Justin Openshaw was the first Harrier to finish in 1:02:16, followed by Andrew Relton in 1:11:32 and Keith Gray in  1:16:16. Alistair Vile started the race but was forced to pull out through injury.  Justin has written a report on the event.

Three Harriers ran in the Luton Marathon. In hardly ideal conditions for the 26.2m, Paul Stuart ran 3:27:56, Nick Bampton did 3:59:38 and Mike Statham finished in 4:02:05. Joe Nellis, Vic Byer and Chris Cottam finished in 104th position in the Luton Marathon 3-stage relay and Lynne Gingell, Jude Cottam and Liz Byer finished in 151st. position. Tony Dadd ran for the 3rd team to finish - the University of London.

Andrea Sewell continued with her good form this year with another pb at the Norwich Half Marathon. Andrea's time of 1:47:00 was a 7mins 50 secs improvement on her previous half best.

Adam Hills and Peter Campbell took part in the Cyprus International 4-Day Challenge. The challenge involved a 6k, 11k, half marathon and 10k runs. Adam finished in 21st position from 203 finishers in 3:41:43 and Peter finished in 155th position in 4:50:58.

Wolverton 5
(Saturday 24th November 2007)

Please note: Due to possible inaccuracies in some of the chip times at Wolverton, the gun times will be used as the official times. Both the gun times and the chip times are given on the results.

David Sutcliffe reports on the Race:

A freezing temperature with biting winds from across the Willan Lakes would not normally make for fast running times.  However Donna's current form is such that Anna Berrill's club record of 29:32, set as it happens at Wolverton in much more congenial conditions in 2001, was eclipsed by a comfortable 21 seconds, Donna finishing second to Amy Waterhouse, a very good runner from Sale Harriers, who rank amongst the top UK clubs. Nora Haggart the showed that two demanding Marathons can be an excellent build-up for sharper events, running 36:21, clipping 23 seconds off the Harriers 50+ best time, held previously by Teresa Munns. The Ladies' contest also featured another very good performance by Renee Corbett, and a second place 45+ team score against strong opposition, by Kathy Horsman, Sara Lee and Nora.

Amongst the men, Bill Billington celebrated his M70 elevation by winning this age group in 39:34 and being awarded a kit voucher for a company believed to be in Stoke-on-Trent, while Bob Wells was the 2nd MV60 to finish after  John Exley of Oxford City, an international and former rival during Bob's running career in that area, who ran under 30min. Special praise is due for all 20 Harriers who tackled this race, which also featured an almost total absence of facilities e.g for changing and providing liquid refreshment from any source.

My thanks to everyone for an entertaining day, and particularly to Malcom, Adam and other supporters present for their vocal encouragement.

David

St Neots Half Marathon
(Sunday 18th November 2007)

It was another successful day of racing for the Harriers at St Neots with Donna McEwen being the 2nd lady to finish and Bob Wells winning the MV60 prize. More than half the Harriers in the race also ran pb's. Donna finished in 1:21:30 which was just 2 seconds outside her pb. Donna's age graded score of 80.45% was also the 13th highest in the race. Bob finished in 1:24:32 which equated to an age graded score of 85.6% or the 2nd highest in the race.

St Neots is obviously a fast course for many Harriers as at least seven of those getting pb's had set their previous pb's on the course. This list included Steve Daniels (1:28:40), Justin Openshaw (1:28:47), Mark Tinkler (1:31:17), Paul Stuart (1:33:15), Richard Watson (1:38:34), Rachel Burrage (1:56:22) and David Prior  (1:57:37).

Among the other Harriers running pb's were Kathy Horsman  who was the 2nd LV45 in 1:35:14, Sarah Lee (1:36:15), Alison Cooper (1:41:43), Keith Gray  (1:46:54), Chris Fadden (1:49:10), Judith Ingledew (1:49:56), Samantha Linney (1:58:32), Linda Payne  (2:19:25), Mandy Pullinger (2:27:37) and Elise Allen  (2:38:04).

Henlow 10 & Stevenage 5k
(Wednesday 14th November 2007)

Very well done Pauline Bambury who set a new LV55 club best time for the 5k at Stevenage. Pauline's time of 22:30 was a 63 secs improvement on the previous best for the age category and distance. Pauline was also the 1st LV55 at Stevenage.

Seven Harriers ran in the Henlow 10. The first to finish and the 3rd lady overall was Carla Fisher in 1:09:11. Nora Haggart was next in 1:18:06 followed by Stuart Bullard in 1:25:29. Elaine Reynolds finished in a new pb of 1:26:07.   Malcolm McEwen ran 1:29:55, Angela Kay did 1:32:00 and Nick Fone crossed the line in 1:36:22.

3-Counties XC @ Biggleswade
(Sunday 11th November 2007)

The Harriers once again finished in 2nd position in the 2nd race of the 2007/08 Three-Counties XC league at Biggleswade. The Club scored a total of 158 points which was just 27 points behind the winners Wootton with 131 points. The Harriers finished in 3rd position in the men's race with 136 points and the ladies finished in 2nd position with 22 points. The seven Harriers men to score were James Elworthy, JP Mitchell, Tony Dadd, Stephen Earley, Jose Ariza, Simon Fawcett and Alastair Fadden. The three Harriers ladies to score were Donna McEwen (1st lady overall), Carla Fisher and Anna Litchfield.

67 Harriers ran in the race which is thought to be the most number of Harriers to have run in a 3-Counties XC event.

 Frankfurt Marathon : Dublin Marathon
Fenland 10Gt South Run 10

(Sunday 28th October & Monday 29th October 2007)

A tremendous run by Bob Wells who set a new MV60 club best time of 2:58:09 in the Dublin Marathon. Bob improved the previous MV60 marathon best (which was also held by Bob) by over two and a half minutes. Stuart Trevallion also had a good run at Dublin finishing just outside three hours in 3:02:10.

Well done also to Nora Haggart who set a new LV50 club best time for the marathon of 3:44:30 at Frankfurt.  It was the 3rd LV50 club best time that Nora has set this year. Well done also to Richard Watson who finished in 3:49:40, a pb by over an hour.

Seven Harriers ran in the Fenland 10. The 1st Harrier to finish and the 3rd MV45 was Morgan Walters in 62:17. Sally Cartwright was the 3rd LV40 in a new pb of 69:29 and Fiona Fiander recorded a new pb of 1:38:49. Down in Portsmouth, Chris Capps ran in a windy and wet Gt South Run 10 and crossed the line in  79:09.Sylvia Jones who was running her first 10m race finished in 1:55:32. Noel Jones ran in the Beachy Head Marathon in Eastbourne. The race involves a climb of somewhere between 3,500 and 4,300 feet so Noel is feeling the effects of it. Noel completed the race in around 4:32:00.

Amsterdam MarathonThe Ampthill Trophy
(Sunday 21st October 2007)

A tremendous performance by Tony Dadd who ran the fastest marathon time by a Harrier for many years when finishing the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:43:36. Tony's run was a pb by 4 mins 43 secs, his previous best being 2:48:19 which he set at Rotterdam in 2006. According to Tony, the conditions were perfect and the course was fantastic. It was also the first time in nine marathons that Tony did not 'hit the wall' Tony was the 114th finisher overall and the 14th V35. A video of Tony crossing the finishing line can be viewed at this link.

30 Harriers also took part on the Ampthill XC which is run over a 8K course. Stephen Earley was the first Harrier to finish in 30:33 followed by David Dormer  in 31:27 and Donna McEwen  who was the 1st lady overall in 32:38. Donne, Carla Fisher (34:24) and Sally Cartwright  (35:36) won the ladies team prize and Steve, David and Simon Costin (32:56) were the 2nd men's team.

Gt Eastern Half Marathon
(Sunday 14th October 2007)

There was an excellent turnout of Harriers at the Gt Eastern Half Marathon in Peterborough, the club's half marathon championship. On probably the flattest half marathon course in the area and on a day more or less perfect for running, there were many fine performances with more than a third of the 50 plus Harriers running getting pb's. Two new club best times were also set.

The first Harrier to finish out of a total of 2,286 finishers overall was Stephen Earley in 1:16:11. Steve's time was a pb (we think) as was that of JP Mitchell who was the second Harrier to finish and the 17th overall in 1:16:47. The third Harrier to finish and the 3rd MV45 was Morgan Walters in 1:19:47. The first lady Harrier to finish and the 6th lady overall was Donna McEwen in a new club best time of 1:21:28. The second lady Harrier was Denise Coghill in 1:31:47 and the third lady Harrier was  Sarah Lee in a new pb of 1:37:34. Among the many other Harriers who got pb's was Nora Haggart who set a new LV50 club best time of 1:41:13. Nora was also the 2nd LV50 on the day. Well done to all the other Harriers who got pb's (too numerous to mention) or put in fast performances.

If you ran a pb and this is not marked on the results lets know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk. Also. its highly likely that the names of some of the Harriers who ran have not been included on the Harriers results. If your name is missing, let's know your time at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk and it will be added to the list.

Away from Peterborough and up in Leicester, Andrea Sewell put in another another good performance with a time of 4:00:24 in the Leicester Marathon which was a pb by 26 mins. Andrea's time by her own watch was over a minute faster than the official chip time at 3:59:18, the difference being the minute or so it took Andrea to get over the start line. The race was well organised and the marshalls were brilliant.  The course was advertised as "predominantly flat" but was actually quite undulating.  There were lots of complaints about this, as it was quite misleading.  Andrea was very grateful to Andy that made her train on some hilly routes!!

Standalone 10k
(Sunday 7th October 2007)

Twenty-one Harriers lined up in a field of over one thousand for the twentieth Standalone 10k. Again the event featured lively organisation and a testing undulating course. Fresh weather conditions with the temperature rising as matters proceeded made for brisk running times, with the race winner, Neilson Hall on North Herts clocking 31m17s, and Donna McEwen slicing just 47 seconds off her PB to take third Ladies' position in 37m 39s. In-form performances by Carla Fisher (8th lady in 40m23s) and Denise Coghill (10th lady in 41m42s) ensured a comfortable second team position behind North Herts Ladies. First Harrier home was Stephen Earley in a very good 35m41s in 16th place, followed by a quality performance from Bob Wells, second in a strongly contested M60 section. Well run everyone - and thanks for a most entertaining morning.

Round Norfolk Relay
(15th/16th September 2007)

Four Bedford Harriers took part in the Round Norfolk Relay on the weekend of 15/16 September. This is a continuous relay with 50 teams of 17 runners completing the 193 miles around the border of Norfolk over something approximating a 24 hour period. It is an incredible team experience and quite a logistical challenge to ensure that runners are all transported to their starts on time and with cars and bikes ready to roll in support. For further information take a look at http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.co.uk

Kate Barnard and Simon Fawcett ran for team "Fetcheveryone.com", which was the 1st casual team out of the 10 entered. Paul Holmes regrettably had to pull out of the team before the event due to injury. Noel Jones ran for team "Fetcheveryone Else" in addition to managing the team and Sylvia Jones was timekeeper. Two Harriers ran in the Robin Hood Half Marathon. Paul Raymond finished in 1:47:41 and Jack Chana ran 2:02:03.

Six Harriers also ran in the Cransley Half. It was a friendly well-organised event in aid of the Cransley Hospice, with a 2K-ish fun run for 9-14 year-olds followed by a 10K and Half with about 150 entrants in each race. The course was undulating and the weather was pleasantly warm but the wind this year wasn't kind to the half-marathoners, being against for the last 5 miles. Morris Dempster running in his last race for the Harriers before going off to Singapore for three years, ran 1:32:10 and Tony Dadd finished in 4th position in 1:19:49. The Grizzly & Swinehead 5 & 10
Vitruvian Triathlon  & Grunty Fen Half Marathon
(Sunday 9th September 2007)

Very well done again to Donna McEwen who put in another excellent performance at the Grizzly, a tough and hilly 22 mile course run over 'multi-terrain territory' in Devon. Donna was the 1st lady to finish and the 35th overall in a time of 2:52:57. (Following her win, ITV's West Country News had a good feature on  Donna including footage of her running plus an interview). The second Harrier Harrier to finish was  David Holt in 3:02:15 followed by Cliff Smith in 3:41:27 (This was Cliff's first race since the Marathon des Sables race back in April. The Marathon des Sables is a  6 day / 230km endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco). The fourth Harrier to finish was Viv Kilgour in 3:49:14 followed by Liz Simmons (we think) in 4:17:20 and Malcolm McEwen in  5:13:58.

Dave reports that the Grizzly was a different race this year, postponed to September from it's usual wild March slot due to the grounded MSC Napoli on Branscombe beach. But to make up for lack of gales, we had 50% more climbing (over 2,000') and the usual mud baths and of course the run along the shingle Branscombe beach followed by the 'Stairway to Heaven' up the cliffs. Maybe the hardest course to date, and full credit to Donna who came in FIRST LADY - a fantastic result in a high-profile event, well done Donna:

Lyon Marathon
(Sunday 29th April 2007)

An excellent performance in the Lyon Marathon by Stuart Trevallion who finished in 3:00:57 despite running in
28° C of heat (and the lack of energy drinks  on the course). Lyon is a flat course and a friendly running experience. The food supplied at the feeding stations was also good and included dried apricots, raisins, oranges, bananas, cake, oat bars and loads of other stuff. Though Stuart missed a PB, he can claim to be the first Briton of five over the line - one of whom was his brother.

It was also another good performance by the Harriers ladies vets team, this time in the Eastern Vets Road Relays with  Anna Litchfield, Andrea Ward and Sally Cartwright extending their winning run. David Sutcliffe reports on the event.

The rural calm of Hemingford Grey, home of retired prime ministers and equally protected wild life, was only mildly disturbed by the annual running of this event, over a  3.2 km loop around near-perfectly level Cambridgeshire lanes.
Despite a low turnout there was some good quality running. Male and female teams all stated together and in the Ladies' contest there was a real dust-up over the first stage, with Tanya Taylor of Nene Valley handing over in first place just a few meters ahead of ANNA LITCHFIELD in a brisk time of around 11min 30sec. With ANDREA WARD and SALLY CARTWRIGHT then gaining the lead comfortably for the remaining two stages, the Harriers team extended their run of cleaning up local opposition, and will surely improve even further when taking on stronger opposition.
AVRIL MONMONT, continuing on her comeback trail, ran a positive first for our second Ladies' team, which overnight had become a ''mixed all-stars team'', with JUDY and DAVID PRIOR tackling the second and third stages with great spirit, and even challenging the Harriers 65+ team until BILL BILLINGTON, unfazed by his recent sterling London Marathon effort pulled away. So yet another win for the ''supercrock'' team, for whom MAURICE CROOK and JIM HENDRY had costed round the first two stages.

My thanks to the teams for an entertaining morning!

NB Medals and team trophies await collection when I next see you.

Flitwick 10k &
Rotterdam Marathon
(Sunday 15th April 2007)

Seven Harriers ran in the Rotterdam Marathon and they found it hard going! Tony Dadd reports:

I was there - although at 31K I thought neither my mind nor my body was any more - the organisers binned the race at 3:45 ish and tried to force people to walk to the finish.

The race starts at 11am and although max temp was 28 in the shade probably, in the sun it was low-mid 30s for sure. There was very low humidity and no wind so evaporation of sweat was instant and dehydration occurred very quickly. This experience was truly horrible and most people were delighted to be in one piece at the finish.

Piron (the wise old man of 50+ marathons) reckoned the conditions took anything between 10 and 20 minutes off people's times, so Paul Stuart's PB by a few seconds and Andy Kemp's PB by 5 and a half mins were spectacular. The official times were:

Tony Dadd 2:57:11(113th, best position by 68 places), Andy Kemp 3:29:48 (pb by 5 mins 30 secs), Mark Tinkler 3:32:39, Richard Piron 3:35:04, Paul Stuart 3:35:07 (pb by 19 secs), Kevin White 4:07:58 and Richard Ogborne 4:32:42. The Str1ders had 5 other runners, including two debuts (what a race to debut at!)

***************************

The second Harrier was Simon Fawcett in 37:38 and the third was Simon North in 40:10. The first lady Harrier to finish was Anna Litchfield in 41:50. The second Harrier lady was Carla Fisher (in what may have been a new pb) of 42:13 and the third lady Harrier was Andrea Ward in 43:13. Among the Harriers getting pb's were Noel Jones (4:29). If any other Harriers ran pb's at Flitwick or your time has not been included in the Harriers results, let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Explanation of Age Grading:

The scores in the table are age graded. For those unfamiliar with the idea, age graded scores measure any race-time in terms of a percentage against the WORLD BEST for a runner of the same age and sex, thus giving an accurate and unbiased measure of  performance.

EXAMPLE: a male aged 41 runs 10 miles in 73m 49sec

THE WORLD-BEST for a 41 year-old male is 46m 16sec

DIVIDE 46-16 by 73-49 and you get 62.68%.

So our runner would score 62.68 championship points.

Around a hundred runners aged 35 to 79 including 25 Harriers took part in the Eastern Vets XC at Priory Marina in Bedford. The course was slippy and in places very wet underfoot; there was also a sharp wind but strong sun. A very congenial atmosphere consisted throughout and it contributed to another successful XC meeting. The  stadium bar area was made available for post-race refreshment.

This was a competitive race for veterans of all ability levels, with some very quick runners setting the pace, including at least three known to have competed as veterans at international level. With 16 individual and 7 team age group's being sorted out, some of the results are still awaited. In the next groups, where team results are still awaited, Veronica was placed 2nd in the W45-49's, Jacky Keenan 3rd in the W 55-59's and Iva Barr 1st W75+. Cuba Marathon & 25k Trail Race
(Sunday 14th January 2007)

In January 2007 Suet Lua, Ralph Ward, Andrea Ranson and Andy Sewell visited Cuba to take part in the first ever Cuban Trail Marathon and 25k.

Soroa, Pinar Del Rio, Cuba – 14th January 2007:

The day arrived; there was a calm and relaxed atmosphere around camp.  Some played scrabble whilst others strolled about the pool area.  Last minute adjustments were made to kit as the turkey vultures circled overhead: they were to be our constant companions for the next few hours.  We all knew that this was going to be something special, and we were not to be disappointed.

At 10 o’clock we set off, 30 degrees in the sun and almost 70% humidity.  After a brief section of road we hit the trails, which twisted and climbed their way through the lush vegetation.  It was rocky underfoot, and in places deeply rutted from the ox-drawn carts which carried produce from the various plantations.  Occasionally the forest canopy opened up to reveal small homesteads and farms where chickens, pigs and goats roamed freely.  As we ran by we were watched with amusement and bemusement by the locals.  One farmer had a trestle-table laden with freshly cut sugar cane which provided a sweet and refreshing energy source for our ever-wearying bodies.

There were numerous river crossings, but being the dry season they were mostly only shin deep.  We ran along one stretch of river for over 200 metres, lunging into the deeper pools, scattering small fish as we went.  Our guide had told us that there were no dangerous or poisonous creatures in Cuba; the alligators confined to the mangrove swamps. With this in mind we ploughed through the dense undergrowth, carefully side-stepping a black snake which resembled a thick coil of liquorice.

Bird song was everywhere and the bushes were alive with continuous rustlings and hoots, reminiscent of Jurassic Park.  Air plants and orchids adorned the trees and the air was full of spicy woody aromas.

The hills!  Did I mention the hills?  There were two notable monsters at 11k, and rather cruelly, at 40k (the latter being virtually impossible to run up, that required a technique of scrambling and tree grabbing). Just beyond the cascades and we were there – civilization – we’d done it!  What an amazing experience, and as we sat with our legs in the pool we all agreed that it was one that we would never ever forget.

Afterword:

As the sun was rising we ran back along the beach, the soft white sand massaging our feet and squidging up between our toes.  In our hands we each held a brightly-coloured sea-shell – a gift from the man who had readily accepted our well-used trainers!

Andy Sewell was the 2nd to finish in 3:48:35 and Andrea Ranson was the 3rd lady in 4:40:21. Ralph Ward  finished 2nd in the 25k trail race in 2:33:57 and Suet Lua was the 1st LV45 in 3:12:19.

Bedfordshire XC Championships (at Ampthill Park)
(Saturday 6th January 2007)

20 Harriers competed in the Bedfordshire cross country championships at Ampthill Park on Saturday. On a wet and muddy day, the Harriers came away with a host of honours including the 1st ladies team, the 1st ladies vets team , the 2nd mens team and the 2nd mens vets team. We think it is the first time that the Harriers ladies have won the event, so it is a terrific achievement by the club.

The ladies raced over a 6k course. The 1st lady Harrier to finish and the 2nd overall was Donna McEwen in 26:27. Anna Litchfield was the second Harrier lady and the 2nd LV35 overall in 27:02 and Shantha Dickinson was the 3rd lady Harriers and the 7th overall in 27:33. Donna, Anna and Shantha won the ladies team prize and Anna, Sally Cartwright (29:31) and Carol Cooper (31:39) won the ladies vets prize. Also running were Denise Coghill (28:49), Kathy Horsman (31:43) and Lisa Chapple (33:45).

The MVs (over 60) raced over an 8k course. The first to finish overall was Bob Wells in 37:42, David Sutcliffe was the 1st MV70 in 53:49 and Bill Billington was the 1st MV65 in 59:40. Bill's time would have been a lot faster (around 45 mins) but he was sent of on a third lap by the marshals rather than to the finish.

The senior men and MVs (under 60) competed over a 12k course. The first Harrier to finish and the 11th overall was Tony Dadd in 48:00. The second Harrier and the 1st MV40 overall was Kevin Willett in 48:54 and the third Harrier was Richard Piron in 52:55. Tony, Kevin, Richard, Simon Fisher (52:29), Rob Miller (56:15) and Steve Gaunt (56:24) were the second mens team and Kevin, Richard, Simon and Steve  were the second vets team. Also running were Tony Parello (58:27), Tony Barnes (60:29), Noel Jones (60:52) and Andy Purdy (64:27).
