Viv and I are always on the look out for interesting off-road events, and we found a gem in the Mortimer Forest Hill Race. Whilst 'only' ten miles but over 500 metres of climb, the results demonstrate that this is no road-race. It is definitely Grizzly-style with streams, steep hills, mud and ice. Around 2 miles from the start we faced the single-file mud steps up to Mary Knoll that seem to go on forever. Then around halfway the 'Pipe-Track' comprises a series of steep up and downs - longer and steeper than anything Millbrook can offer. Hoping for some respite, a forest track then continues to climb up Bringewood Rise, and eventually you reach High Vinnals and the only water station (around 6 miles - over an hour for me) before climbing again onto Jack Common with fantastic views down to Ludlow Castle, and the long icy descents to the finish.
