The Saffron Walden 10k is 90% off road for those who like the farm tracks
and field headlands for running. The run starts from the playing fields
in Newport village, facing a 1 mile steady uphill on a flinty farm track.
It’s an unusually warm September morning so a hard climb to the top, and
then turns for a ‘there and back’ section to the edge of the next
village. At half way its following a field edge section, single line but
at this stage very little overtaking, or being overtaken. Into the edge
of another village before turning to another farm track, quite a steep
climb and back to Newport. You pass the finish line at 9k! and then it’s
a last 1k around the sport field to the finish. Its one for the off
roaders, very friendly, and the ladies do an extremely impressive array of
cakes to indulge with a cup of tea
