When I took part in this event, organised by the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, three years ago the route had to be modified because of deep snow. This year I returned to enjoy the full course which covers about 26 miles with 3000ft of ascent and includes some of the finest peat bogs and hags in the North Pennines along the ridge between Hard Rigg and Killhope Law. Shortly before the checkpoint at Black Hill three of us paused to drag a girl from a boggy hole where she'd sunk up to her waist (browse the Challenge facebook page for photos of other would be 'swimmers'). Everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge and no doubt I'll be back for another portion of pie and peas.
