Richard reports on the race:

A quick impulse decision was made between doing the Colchester 10k or the Halstead Marathon. I'd heard it was one of the prettiest marathons and in the Runners World top 5 UK Marathons, so that got my vote.

I wanted to run a marathon just to enjoy it, with no time pressures, so had kept quiet about running it. Sunday morning woke up with not a cloud in the sky, and there were still no clouds at 10am when we started. I knew it was a hilly course, the Ampthill and Flitwick guy I met at the start said it was like the Flitwick 10k, but constantly over the marathon distance (he wasn't wrong).

It is a great course, and well supported and marshalled, with many of the local running clubs manning water stations. It was a beautiful day as well, at 21 miles a sign was put up "bees swarming" and you were advised to keep mouths shut as the bees were buzzing all over the course.

The course climbs and falls an amazing 1,300m over the 26.2m which on a day like yesterday broke me at the 23 mile mark when I was met with the final hill (think coming out of Carlton on the Oakley 20).

A good race, pleased with my time of 4:22 given the course and conditions, it was certainly the toughest race I've ever done
