Derwentwater 10.

Been going since 1960 and to be honest, the marshalling was from that era though I did not feel any safely concerns.  Being a regular visitor to the Lake District for many years this is a race I had wanted to do.

We started in the Market Square in Keswick at noon and within 30 ft of the start we had to turn sharp right, and that got us walking after about 10 running paces.  Up the main street, and out of town into Borrowdale, with one sign saying runners keep left, the route though not flat the undulations were steady as we passed the car park for Ashnesss Bridge and along the side of Derwentwater.

There were a couple of bigger hills by Ladore Falls and Borrowdale Hotels’ respectively before a right turn over Grange Bridge.  Not sure what the marshal was doing here, as we had already crossed the road before we got to him.

From just short of 5 miles to just short of 8 miles the road climbed around the foot of Catbells before dropping quickly down, the point my calf started to tighten up..  Further undulations took us on the other side of Derwentwater and into Portenscale and then the A66 at 9 miles.  By now my calf was very tight and rather than pushing on and I had planned, I was hanging in there wanting the finish.

The finish was at Keswick School and I completed in just over 83 minutes, disappointing as I was hoping for a sub 80 minutes.  A great race with the weather kind for us, though cold.  Keswick is a long way to go for 10 miles, however we had a great break with all the weathers of the year in 2 days (the snow already on the tops of the mountains).
